If you have a chronic illness or disability you may be eligible for VAT exemption on qualifying items. Many items such as Mobility Scooters, Riser Recliner and Wheelchairs can be purchased by chronically sick or disabled people at 0% rather than 20% VAT. This can be a significant saving particularly on larger or more complex items. Our breakdown of who is eligible for VAT relief and how to claim is designed to help simplify the process for customers.
Who is eligible for VAT relief?
The government specify that you mush fit into the following criteria to qualify for VAT exemption:
If you are purchasing as a charity simply provide you charity number.
To get the product VAT free your disability has to qualify. For VAT purposes, you’re disabled or have a long-term illness if:
- you have a physical or mental impairment that affects your ability to carry out everyday activities, for example blindness
- you have a condition that’s treated as chronic sickness, like diabetes
- you’re terminally ill
You don’t qualify if you’re elderly but able-bodied, or if you’re temporarily disabled.
HMRC will require confirmation in writing of your disability / illness. Bellow is our VAT Form. If you fill this out, sign it and post / email it back to us including details of your purchase we can refund qualifying users the VAT amount or remove the VAT before payment is made.
